4 Reasons Texans Love Stone Outdoor Kitchens

Picture a classic Texas cookout. Whether it’s near a split-rail fence in Hill Country or on a spacious front porch in Houston, one thing’s for sure — there’s plenty of natural stone in the space.

From timeless aesthetics to deeply trusted durability, here’s why Texans can’t get enough of natural stone in their outdoor kitchens and grills.

Timeless Texas Aesthetics

Every region of Texas is deeply connected to its local flagstone. From Houston bluestone to San Antonio sandstone, to the rich varieties of limestone in Dallas-Fort Worth and Austin, building design has relied on local natural stone for centuries.

When you choose natural stone, you don’t just get a dependable building material. You build a symbol of Texas style and tradition into your outdoor kitchen

Seamless Kitchen Design

Natural stone isn’t just for granite countertops. Texas flagstone is usable throughout your outdoor kitchen space — from island finishing materials to base materials, roofing support columns to flooring.

The boundless versatility of stone in outdoor kitchen design allows you to integrate your new space seamlessly with your existing home architecture and outdoor spaces.

Easily Sourced Materials

Natural stone is so abundant in Texas that several beautiful, durable varieties are named for their quarries. For example, Lueders limestone is a gorgeous and versatile building material that looks great on islands and countertops.

Our design-build professionals source flagstone from local quarries to use in your outdoor kitchen. You get local stone that reflects the natural aesthetics of where you live, and reduce the shipping costs of your building materials!

Structural Stability

Charm and style is important — but you need materials that support the heat, weight and daily use of your outdoor kitchen, its appliances and furniture

Allied Outdoor Solutions uses trusted stone like limestone, granite and travertine to create patio kitchens that are as durable as they are beautiful.

Stone & Cedar Comfort

Key Design Considerations:

  • Complete outdoor entertainment. These homeowners wanted it all — an outdoor kitchen, dining area and media center, all under the protection of a cedar patio roof.
  • Heat mitigation. Light colored natural stone and Carvestone flooring keeps the heat down, whether it’s from the summer sun or the custom stainless steel grill.

The Finished Kitchen:

The combination of cedar and rich local flagstone makes this kitchen a slice of Texas outdoor living. Light colors resist the heat, while a smart fan adds ventilation underneath the airy cedar hip roof.

Cooking, dining and enjoyment are everywhere. Stainless steel appliances are thoughtfully built into a spacious L-shaped perimeter island, and a stone feature wall supports the outdoor TV. A square center island hosts guests for dining and drinks.

Pro Tip: An attached patio structure is a great place for an outdoor kitchen. It’s a much shorter run for gas lines, water lines and electricity — a smart cost-saving concept.

Grilling Al Fresco

Key Design Considerations:

  • Diverse cooking options. As if the massive stainless steel grill wasn’t enough, these homeowners went the extra mile with a beautifully distinct wood fired oven.
  • Lakeside view. There was no chance we’d block a view this beautiful. Light natural stone support columns are slimmed down to maximize landscape views.

The Finished Kitchen:

Grill, cook and enjoy your meal in the peaceful serenity of this lakeside property. A wood burning oven and chef-quality grill are at your disposal, and a natural stone island with granite countertop offers ample space for food prep and serving.

Take in an unobstructed view of the lake, outdoor pool and spa from the covered patio dining area. Locally sourced sandstone is used throughout the design — from the island’s finishing materials to the roof support columns and the wood oven. It seamlessly connects this outdoor kitchen to the existing home’s exterior facade.

Blazing Backyard Grill

Key Design Considerations:

  • Modern aesthetics. The flat pan roof, industrial smart fan, sleek black countertops and custom fire pit table — this outdoor grill oozes modern style and sophistication.
  • Maximizing the space. We packed a custom fire table, bar seating for four, an outdoor couch, and 2 distinct grill options into this design, and left ample room for work and unrestricted movement in the space.

The Finished Kitchen:

This freestanding outdoor kitchen and grill space feels like we shrunk the swankiest West Sixth Street patio and dropped it in your backyard. Sleek lines, elevated design materials and a statement custom fire table elevate the space.

Choose between a premium stainless steel grill or kamado style cooking in a Big Green Egg. Durable limestone accents finish the bar and grill island, and the Carvestone modified concrete overlay flooring is colored and textured to match.

Smoke and Stone

Key Design Considerations:

  • Rustic yet resilient. Stacked stone injects this outdoor kitchen island with rustic visual appeal, but also offers the stability and support of modern design materials.
  • Stainless steel suite. A fleet of stainless steel kitchen amenities is housed in the kitchen island — grill, burner, refrigerator and dedicated storage drawers.

The Finished Kitchen:

The unique stacked stone construction of this outdoor kitchen island achieves durability and style without grouting. It’s still more than strong enough to support 5 distinct stainless steel kitchen appliances and storage areas, including a heavy-duty grill and refrigerator.

The dark rustic stacked stone is brightened by the light cedar patio ceiling overhead. This bespoke, natural space beautifully reflects the woods along the property line.

Stone Outdoor Kitchen FAQs and Answers

At Allied Outdoor Solutions, we’ve installed thousands of custom stone outdoor kitchens in Houston, San Antonio, Austin and Dallas-Fort Worth. Our name is synonymous with thoughtful, handcrafted Texas outdoor living spaces.

We asked our design-build experts to list the most frequently asked questions about outdoor stone kitchens in Texas — use their answers to move past inspiration and jumpstart your project planning.

How big is the average stone outdoor kitchen?

The average Allied Outdoor Solutions stone outdoor kitchen space is roughly 20’. We recommend a space no smaller than 12’ — it’s difficult to fit your appliances and counter space in smaller areas.

What stone is best for an outdoor kitchen countertop?

Granite has the ideal heat resistance, aesthetic beauty and structural stability to succeed in outdoor kitchen countertops. It withstands the direct heat of outdoor grills and cooktops and requires minimal maintenance. In Texas, limestone is an easily sourced and unique alternative.

What is the best base for stone outdoor kitchens?

Modified concrete offers exceptional durability and pressure resistance. It’s able to withstand up to 6,000 PSI of direct pressure — perfect for supporting islands, appliances and seating areas.

Can I build my outdoor kitchen island on top of pavers?

Generally, no. The weight of outdoor kitchen appliances and grills requires a concrete footer directly beneath your island structure for adequate support and stability.

How do you waterproof an outdoor kitchen?

Patio covers and solid roof structures offer the best moisture resistance for outdoor kitchen areas. Sloped structures like gable and hip roofing divert rainwater away from your kitchen appliances and surfaces.

How do I clean my stone outdoor kitchen?

If you have a covered outdoor kitchen, a simple garden hose or low pressure power washer is more than enough to clean the space.

How long do stone outdoor kitchens last in Texas?

Allied Outdoor Solutions builds custom stone outdoor kitchens that last decades in Texas outdoor spaces. Benefit from the structural stability, durable materials and local expertise provided in our design-build process.
