There’s some general confusion regarding what “resurfacing” actually means. In the pool industry, we think of it in terms of replastering the pool. Often, our clients are referencing their pool deck. It’s because of this, we’ll attempt to describe both on this page. There are 3 levels of pool plaster: white marcite, quartz, and pebble. There are 4 general levels of pool deck resurfacing: stained, spray decking, stamped overlay products, and Carvestone.

A mini pebble plaster is the premier plaster option on the market. It isn't nearly as rough as a large pebble finish but has all the forgiveness and durability a pebble finish has to offer.
Sometimes simpler is better. A white marcite plaster allows the decking, tile and coping to shine. It’s the smallest investment and has been utilized throughout Texas for decades.
A quartz based plaster can provide an elevated, decorative look when compared with a white marcite option. The main issue is that it’s far less forgiving and repairable when compared with a pebble.
Instead of using a standard plaster material, you can also use a tile option. When considering this option, remember that anywhere you place grout will create a maintenance cycle moving forward.
A glass tile sparkles beneath the water and provides an elegant feel that cannot be achieved with a plaster product. It can be slippery on a beach entry so you’ll want to be cautious with where it’s placed.
When resurfacing a pool deck, Carvestone is the premier concrete overlay on the market. Not only is it composed of limestone and quartz but it’s custom colored as well as hand-carved and textured.
Whether it’s because of a lack of space or a lack of desire to have an entire pool, a spool (spa pool) can be the perfect solution. Be aware, this is not a cost-effective process and isn’t a small investment.

Pool resurfacing costs are about as you’d expect. The least expensive plaster application is a white marcite application whereas the largest investment is the pebble finish. We no longer install a quartz based plaster as it has a tendency to mottle and lacks repairability. On the decking, Carvestone is a much more beautiful and durable overlay than a spray deck and it’s priced accordingly.

It depends largely on your water chemistry. white marcite plaster will last over a decade and a pebble finish can last longer than that.
This cannot be answered without advising on your specific area. We often hear that a full pool remodel is priced similarly to the original pool construction.
This comes down to the installation process. Most often, it’s a failure to achieve a solid bond that creates issues down the road.
It’s often obvious to the naked eye but generally every 10-15 years.
