Carvestone vs Stamped Concrete

Carvestone vs Stamped Concrete

As you can see from the above photos, both Carvestone and stamped concrete are solutions that can beautify any area around your home.  When we visit your residence for a free consultation we can offer professional advice to ensure your needs and wants are filled ensuring we fit you with the right solution.  A common misconception between these two hardscapes is that stamped concrete and Carvestone are one in the same.  While they have some similarities, they are unique as you can see from the photo we shared with you above. The good news is that we offer both solutions.

Here are common ways that they are different:

Their name says it all, stamped concrete is concrete with a decorative design installed by highly experienced crews. Carvestone is a proprietary product that only  Allied Outdoor Solutions offers that is a decorative limestone and quartz overlay.

About Stamped Concrete: Concrete is a mixture of cement, water, and an aggregate (sand, gravel or rock). Stamped concrete needs a set of wood forms.  The wood forms contain the concrete and the concrete will take the shape of the forms both in size and shape.   Concrete forms are typically wood 2x4s along with forming/flexible boards.  Using these wood forms Allied Outdoor Solutions can create the desired outdoor space for you. After your project has been formed we will start to place steel rods inside of your forms known as rebar.  There are many sizes of rebar and we use 3/8-inch rebar and place them on 18-inch centers.  This provides the structural integrity with which ensures a long lasting concrete pour of a patio, driveway, or walkway.

Allied Outdoor Solutions can bring your concrete from the mixing truck to the work-site a number of ways.  A few common ways we use are by wheelbarrow, pump truck or a motorized machine better known as a Georgia buggy. After we pour the concrete into the forms.  It will then be bull floated which causes the concrete’s cream to rise to the surface. We do this to ensure the ideal surface to finish the concrete in the desired pattern and color you have chosen with your dedicated project manager.

Allied Outdoor Solutions does not use integral color; we use a topical color known as color hardener because it allows us to have a more consistent finish on the surface. You will see us using a physical rubber stamp to get the desired design you have chosen in advance.  Your new stamped concrete project can be walked on in about 24 to 48 hours.

Allied Outdoor Solutions installs all hardscape options but only recommends the one that best fits your needs.  You can rely on your project consultant to guide you to the right solution and your dedicated project manager to bring to life a space you can enjoy for years to come.

Why concrete overlay is the right choice?

Why concrete overlay is the right choice?

While a concrete overlay may not always be the correct application, there are many scenarios where it is the perfect choice. A few quick checkpoints which could rule out an overlay.

  • Is your concrete severely cracked? A concrete overlay can often work around some minor cracking but if your concrete has experienced significant movement, it is unlikely to be the right application for you.
  • Does the area you’d like to improve has existing concrete? Because a concrete overlay requires a solid concrete base, it generally makes the most sense when the great majority of the area is already in place. Small areas can be added but if the project requires too much new concrete, an overlay will likely lose its efficiency.
  • Is drainage an issue you are trying to solve? Because an overlay is approximately ¼”, it is not capable of correcting poor drainage.

Now that I have briefly described some of the limitations, let me dig into the benefits:

  • There is no messy tear out. An overlay is like the icing on the cake. If you currently have a high-quality concrete slab, an overlay can generally be applied to the surface in just a few short days. And without the need for heavy equipment, it is often far less invasive to your lawn and landscape.
  • An overlay can often be used without creating trip hazards. In areas where your concrete is adjacent to other surfaces (i.e. drains, skimmer baskets, other hardscapes, door thresholds, coping, etc.) the concrete can be feathered to leave you a surface that is almost flush with your existing elements. The thickness can also help supply a high-end look on patios without enough space to install a traditional hardscape product.
  • You’ll have a large influence on the final product. Unlike manufactured products such as stone or pavers, many overlays actually allow you to select the design and color that best suits your specific, unique space. You can select a pattern that creates a cohesive design flow with the interior of your home while selecting a color which will perfectly complement the landscaping and construction materials already existing in your yard. In most cases, an overlay can allow you to update your space while making it look like it was done at the same time as the rest of your space.
  • Cost savings over traditional options. While overlay products can have substantial variation in price depending on the material itself and your market, they generally present a more cost-effective solution that other hardscape materials. Products like travertine, stone, pavers, decorative concrete and porcelain will almost universally be more expensive. Many times, the savings from selecting an overlay solution can be used to update other areas such as the pool finish, coping, landscape and more.
  • Overlays are generally more repairable than slab options. If something impacts the surface of a concrete slab, it can be extremely difficult to repair without leaving obvious scarring from the repair work. In many cases, an overlay can be re-manipulated so that the space looks whole one again.

Is an overlay the right application for you? If all of the above information marries up with the desire you have for your space, it just might be. Call a local expert and see what they think. One thing I know for sure: you’ll be blow away by some of the options available today. In the 80’s and 90’s you would see plain (boring?) overlay applications such as cool decking. Today, we have hand-crafted, custom stone finishes that will leave you wondering how a cementitious product could be made to look like real stone!

Give Your Backyard New Life This Summer with a Pool Deck Overlay

Give Your Backyard New Life This Summer with a Pool Deck Overlay

An unsightly pool deck affects the look of your entire backyard. Not only does it make the pool look old and worn, but also takes away from all adjacent patios, decks, and landscaping. A new pool deck will give your backyard a new life, and make your pool look new again. Homeowners have several options and styles to choose from for their new pool deck.

An outright replacement is an option for a pool deck in disrepair. This comes with the task of ripping the old pool deck out, excavating, and replacing with new concrete. This is a costly undertaking and comes with the risk of damaging the pool itself. Many homeowners opt to leave their pool deck as is when faced with the cost of a complete replacement. A pool deck overlay is a much more cost efficient method that restores the integrity and beauty of your pool deck.

An overlay utilizes your existing pool deck as a base, eliminating the need of removing the concrete. This alone saves the owner a lot of money and time during the project. The overlay uses Carvestone, which is a concrete like material made from crushed limestone and quartz, offering a harder surface that is resistant to chipping. The process involves etching your current pool deck, applying primer, and then the Carvestone product. The beauty of this product is that the owner chooses the color and pattern so that it compliments their current landscaping. A variety of stone patterns and colors allow you to make your pool deck unique and stylish.

If you would like more information on giving your pool area a new look, or fix a pool deck in disrepair please contact us.

Enjoy Your Outdoor Living Area with a Covered Patio

Enjoy Your Outdoor Living Area with a Covered Patio

As a homeowner, you want to spend your money wisely when it comes improvements and additions. It is best to consider your wants and needs, but you should also think about the most versatile options. For instance, when it comes to adding an outdoor living area, one of the smartest choices is a covered patio because it provides you with so much versatility and so many options for furnishing and using the space.

Enjoy Easy Furnishing and Decorating

Without a covered patio, you have to consider many factors for buying furniture, such as how the climate will affect the furniture that you purchase. It is ideal to get furniture that will not experience substantial wear and tear from constant exposure to the sun or getting hit with heavy rain on an annual basis. However, a covered patio allows you to avoid these particular issues.

Protect Yourself from the Elements

Not only do you want to protect your furniture from the elements, but you want to make sure that you and your family are protected as well. A covered patio provides you with the perfect alternative to an uncovered patio or deck, which are both popular options for outdoor living spaces.

Get Comfortable Furniture

Although it is not impossible to get comfortable furniture for an uncovered patio, you will have a more difficult time finding furniture that can last through the years and remain comfortable at the same time. Without the elements to worry about, you can focus on getting the coziest furniture.

If you want help with creating an outdoor living area, contact us today.

New Look with A Carvestone Patio

New Year, New Look with A Carvestone Patio

With the new year, many of us think about the year ahead and what we can do to improve our homes. Are our walkways and driveways looking tired? Have the pool deck and patio seen better days? Is it just time for a change?

When it’s time to upgrade your outdoor environment, here are 5 good reasons to choose carvestone as your concrete overlay option.

Durability. You want your investment to last, and we want our product to look great. An excellent finish comes from a great foundation, so we take as much care with the preparation of the existing surface as we do with the new overlay. We are so sure of this process, we are proud to offer residential owners a 7-year warranty on our product.

Color. With the carvestone process, you can choose the exact mixture you want. Our process allows us to get the color mix to be to the exact one you wish to complement your taste.

Pattern Choice. Whether you want precision squares, random pavers, or a combination of the two, you will get just the style you want with carvestone. All carving work is not by hand, not by form so you can decide the way you want the final finish to look.

Slip Resistance Surface. Carvestone is carved by hand and textured to be non-slip, and we also add non-slip agents into to sealant layer. This makes it an ideal surface for pool decks, patios, and walkways.

Heat Moderation. Everything gets hot in the Texas sun, but the unique properties of the carvestone technique make it a lot cooler than the standard alternatives such as stamped concrete, pavers or painted concrete.

Ready to see how to improve your property? Just contact us to discuss your needs and to arrange a free consultation with one of our expert advisers. We look forward to hearing from you.

Overlay for your Driveway: A Great Way To Enhance The Look Of Your Home

Overlay for your Driveway… Allied Outdoor Solutions has many options.

When you own a home, there are many different areas to take care of. But one area that you should definitely not ignore is your driveway. Having an outdated, beaten up, and distressed driveway can easily affect the overall appearance of your home. That’s why you should consider overlay on driveways in order to make your home look newer and greatly increase its curb appeal with a fresh-looking driveway.

If your driveway looks shabby, it’s going to affect your home. This could be especially important if you are trying to either make your home look nicer or if you are trying to sell your home. On the other hand, a new-looking driveway will not only make your house look better, but will also have your driveway function better.

Overlay for your Driveway

Why concrete overlay?

Replacing an entire driveway can be a long and tedious process. So why not consider an alternative that will have your driveway looking brand-new with only a fraction of the time and the cost? Resurface Your Walkway

Resurface Your Walkway For Your Visitors’ Sake

Are you starting to get bored by the dull appearance of your concrete walkway? Then maybe it’s time to resurface your walkway.

Your walkway is what visitors first encounter when stopping by at your house, and there’s only one chance to make a first impression. Instead of having them walk up to your house on a run-of-the-mill concrete walkway, improve the general beauty of your home  by beautifying your walkway, so that they will be duly impressed and will enter your house with raised spirits.

Your walkway may even be chipped and broken, which can lead to your visitors tripping or stumbling on your walkway, something you definitely do not want.

By resurfacing your walkway with Carvestone, which is made of natural limestone, you can choose from a variety of colors with which to improve the appearance of your front lawn. You also have the option of choosing between various patterns and styles, so that your walkway will be perfectly customized to your taste. Carvestone will not easily be chipped or damaged. It is made with quartz, one of the strongest existing minerals.

We resurface walkways, and we can improve your day by giving your house a whole new look with your beautiful Carvestone walkway.

If you are fed up with encountering the same boring black concrete walkway each day when you walk out the door in the morning, we have just the perfect solution for you. Contact us for more information, and we will be glad to help you out.

Schedule a Pool Deck Overlay in Winter to Have it Ready to Enjoy in the Spring

Schedule a Pool Deck Overlay in Winter to Have it Ready to Enjoy in the Spring

With Texas temperatures, it is easy to spend most of spring and summer in the pool. Unfortunately, this might not be the best option when your pool deck is showing its age. Instead of letting the deck continue to deteriorate another year, you should invest in a pool deck overlay to improve the entire area. Ideally, you should get professional assistance during winter to have the pool ready for spring.

Get the Work Done in the Off-season

Although you could certainly spend some time in the pool throughout wintertime, the outside temperature is not always ideal, especially at nighttime. However, spring and summer are the best seasons for pool time, so you should make it a top priority to get the work done in the off-season.

Enjoy Flexible Scheduling

When you make plans to handle the work during winter, you do not have to worry about tight scheduling as professionals will have more time on their hands compared to other seasons. If you want to take care of the project on weekdays, weekends, or when you are on vacation, you can do so with ease.

Avoid the Heavy Rain

It is spring and summer in which Texas receives the most rain, which can lead to postponed projects. However, winter is the season that receives the least amount of rain, so you get to enjoy fewer delays.

If you want to have your pool ready to go as soon as spring arrives, you should at least start making plans for your pool deck overlay. Contact us if you want to learn more about our professional services.

Don’t Delay – Use Concrete Overlay Today!

Don’t Delay – Use Concrete Overlay Today!
Outdoor spaces tend to go through a lot of wear and tear from the elements. So if you want to redo your outdoor space, you should consider concrete overlay. What makes concrete overlay such a great choice is that it can go right over an existing surface – which means there isn’t a need for demolition, just preparation of the surface.

Whether you need your pool deck, patio, sidewalk, or driveway to be refinished, you should consider concrete overlay. You have a few different choices for application, whether you want a broom finish (which is regular) or a decorative finish (which can be stamped and stained). We take pride in the fact that we will come and bring samples that are best suited for your home, your taste, and style.

The concrete overlay, when done with stamps and stains, is made to look like stone and can provide a brand-new look for your outdoor space. Concrete overlay can be even made to look like bricks on a stylish sidewalk, or uniquely-shaped stone tiles for around your pool.

Apart from the overall quality appearance of our concrete overlay it also comes with our experienced concrete contractors. Here’s what happens when you call us up:

First, we wash the existing surface with a 4000 PSI power washer. Prepping the surface is so important that we usually take an entire day, making sure that the finished overlay will not come off the surface once we’re finished. Then, we put down a coat of Carvestone material that bonds to the concrete, made with crushed limestone and quartz to give it a realistic appearance and the strength to withstand all elements.

Depending on your preferred pattern, we use a different trowelling technique that ranges from a wavy texture to emulate flagstone to a smooth texture to emulate quarried stone. Carving in the pattern by hand ensures that you get a realistic, durable look. In addition to the texture, we can also mix and match colors to your preference.

Finally, we grout the pattern voids with more Carvestone, and seal the overlay to degloss the surface and make it as slip-resistant as possible.

We also do a pre-walk through and a post-job walk through to make sure the job has been done properly from start to finish. We understand that having concrete overlay is exciting because it will refinish, refurbish, and improve a worn-out space. Let us give you the best experience possible, and get your space done perfectly the first time. Please contact us to learn more about our services.
